It was the beginning of the end.

For many, many years, pollution and disrespect of the environment had gone utterly unnoticed after several attempts to guilt humans into stopping. The reasoning: humans had power over the earth. They could cut down the ageless forests, kill the animals that had spent so many years evolving to perfection, and fill the pure air with tons and tons of smog and harmful gasses. The humans could do whatever they wanted, and nothing had ever happened.

Yet.

The consequences were accumulating, slowly and steadily, unseen by the humans who had trained themselves to see only what could be destroyed. As natural predators were killed, populations of 'pest' animals flourished and prospered. As forests died, the inhabitants were forced to flee and seek shelter among humans. As the air was more and more polluted, it became unbreathable. The humans saw this, but it was too late.

It was the beginnning of the end.

Slowly, the humans began to die slow, painful deaths. Rats carried disease, poisoning food. Predators from the dying forests hunted where they could, resorting to desperation and killing humans that strayed too far. The air that the humans breathed killed both them and the animals. There was nothing left.

The humans that remained after the first vicious onslaught of death struggled to find some kind of plan. Oxygen tanks were coveted like gold. People only ate things that had been grown far away from any rats. They built walled cities to keep out the other animals.

Soon, scientists developed a technology to put domes over the cities that would block out all air. They then released pure oxygen into the airless chambers, and allowed people to live there. Life for humans slowly, slowly returned to normal, and most forgot about the outside world, perfectly happy in their safehaven.

Thus, our story begins. It is the tale of one girl born in the dome with little knowledge of what lies beyond the walls. At the mercy of Them, like all the other people in the world, Kara struggles to find peace within herself and her life.
